These are three of the five stars I have got done so far for the Southern Cross. This is a very individual take on this Aussie iconic image. The big star on the top of my shoulder is the latest addition. It was a coverup job over my very first (and worst) tattoo. I'm very pleased with it, although it definitely needs some touching up.

I'm getting the fourth star done this coming Saturday. This is going opposite the compass rose. Then the fifth will follow a few weeks on, going just above and to the right of the bottom star. After this comes the background, which is going to be a hybrid Japanese-style sky with clouds. This will trail down my arm, around my elbow and to my forearm, where I'm going to have some more stars.

The compass rose on the left of the picture (as you're looking at it) is incomplete too. It needs more colour and line thickening. The bottom star also needs some touching up. The scarring (shows as white in the picture) was because I accidentally scrapped it while it was still healing. It is getting better and I intend to have it touched up as well.

Anyway, as I said, this is a work in progress, so it looks a little bit confused at the moment.

Me neither. I have a really good picture in my head of what I want it to look like, though. Lets hope it turns out this way.

I'm already working on design elements for my other arm and thinking about chest pieces. So I'm definitely going to keep on inkin', for sure.

My next one is going to be a small, stylized chaos star, on the top of my left hand, on the webbing between thumb and forefinger.

I like the star. I did a little bit of research and had no idea it was actually 'invented' by Michael Moorcock. I thought it was an ancient symbol. Still, it is very potent, I believe. What color are you thinking of getting?

Yes, it will, down to about the middle of my forearm. I've always really like stars both from an astronomy point of view and as a symbol.

Once this is all finished, I'm going to start on my left arm.

It wasn't, that version is very stylized, with the circle cross added. Here's a regular chaos star....

Color? Black, of course.

I'm attracted to it because even as a little child my doodles always looked like this, stars/arrows pointing in all directions.

Thanks for the information. A number of sites I looked at (including Wikipedia) all suggest Moorcock 'invented' the symbol. I had my doubts, even in the face of some pretty convincing material. I felt sure the symbol or something like it, anyway, had been around for a long time. But anyway, I've included a few of the links for you to have a look at and a laugh.

I've always been fascinated with stars, both as a stargazer and of the symbol itself. I'm really pleased to be getting more. I will post a pic of the work I'm getting done this weekend as soon as I can.

Well if it makes him feel better to claim he invented the symbol himself....hahah.

I think he just happened to *name* it a chaos star, but you could probably find this symbol in caveman etchings, and certainly in Egyptian heiroglyhphs.
