One of the few problems I have with JoeUser, as a site, it the time difference. A lot of the activity occurs while I’m pushing out Z’s on the other side of the world. It can be somewhat frustrating because it means often times, my responses are missed because everyone else has moved on to the next conversation, article or what have you.

There is nothing anyone can do about this, I know, but I was thinking what I would like to know is where JUsers are, in terms of the time. For instance, I know Tex is in Hawaii, so it is easy for me to work out what time it is there, relative to where I am. But with a lot of the people here, apart from a few names of states or cities, I’ve no real idea of the area or the time zone a lot of you are in.

To this end, I’d like to find out a bit more information. I’m not asking for addresses or for any personal information, just the town or closest major city and the state or territory where you all live.

I will kick off with a little bit of information about my suburb, city and state:

I live in a seaside suburb called Maroubra, which is an aboriginal word meaning like thunder and said to be so named because of the sound of the surf. The first house in the area was built by Humphrey McKeon, the great, great (?) grandfather of the DJ in my band. Maroubra is also considered one of the best surf beaches in Sydney, even better than Bondi or North Narrabeen. This year, in fact, Maroubra Beach became the second Australian beach to be named a National Surfing Reserve.

Maroubra is located in the district referred to as the Eastern Suburbs of the greater Sydney area. Sydney is the oldest and largest city in Australia but contrary to some popular beliefs, is not the capital of Australia. The capital is Canberra, located in the Australian Capital Territory, about 3 hours inland and south west of Sydney. Sydney is the capital of the state called New South Wales and is known around the world for its beautiful scenic harbour, the Sydney Harbour Bridge (affectionately known as The Coat Hanger) and for the Jorn Utzon-designed Sydney Opera House.

New South Wales, or NSW for short, is Australia’s most populous state, but with two-thirds of the state population live in Sydney and the bulk of the remainder living somewhere along its 1900 kilometre coastline. NSW is nicknamed either the First State or the Premier State. It is bordered by Victoria to the south, South Australia to the west and Queensland to the north. There are a number of emblems representing the state: the floral emblem is the Waratah; the bird emblem is the Kookaburra; the animal emblem is the Platypus; and the fish emblem is the Blue Groper.

Weather wise, it is subtropical in the north of the state, cool temperate in the far south. The coastal strip is separated from the inland by the Great Dividing Range. Inland, the weather varies from cold in the mountain ranges, cool temperate on the southern plains and arid in the north-west. Time wise, NSW is GMT +10 hours normally and +11 hours during daylight savings, as we are now. The time is referred to as Eastern Standard Time or EST.

So, there you have it. This is my suburb, my city and my state. Looking forward to learning more about yours.

I live in the city of Citrus Heights, which lies within the central valley of northern California. Basically its a newer city branched off of Sacramento, the state capital.

Within a hour and a half or so you can be in Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, and Shast a bit farther.

It's fairly mild in the winter, usually around 50 degrees or so. I just moved here recently this past summer where I scorched my balls off for about a month with temps about 110 or so. Its cooled of finally and far more pleasant.

Glen Allen, which is a suburb of Richmond Va, in the old USA. (I guess we are new).  It is called the capital of the confederacy as this is where the Confederate White house is and was during the war.  We are now on EST which is GMT-5. So I guess now we are 16 hours off of yours, and during our summer, your winter, that changes to 14 (since you go off of DST and we go on it).

Xythe, I used to work for a company that had a store in Citrus Heights, so I know where you are (visited it a couple of times).  An hour west of Xythe the price of houses goes up about 100%!  Ouch.

You're in Maroubra, Maso? Are you a 'Bra Boy? I've got a mate who lives in that suburb.

I'm in Canberra, Australia which is in the same timezone as Sydney. It's a pretty small city, only around 300 thousand people, most of whom are public servants, diplomats, students or political lobbyists.

Yes indeed they do Doc. I lived in Marin for about 12 years. The average house is up around $700K these days.

The Big Picture

More to the point.

My house is somewhere in that concrete mess. I am from Kentucky, Can-tuk-ee (Dark and bloody ground). I've lived most of my life in places that look like this. Sometimes even places like this. I have a little girl, though, so this place is safe, clean, within walking distance from an elementary school, etc., etc. It makes me sick, but we do what we have to do.

We have the Kentucky Horse Park, soon to be the host of the world equestrian competition. We have a lot of historical areas, lots of celebs and historical figures come from here, live or lived here here in Kentucky. Mostly people go to the mall.

The people here are nice for the most part. We have a high concentration of wealth, low crime, everyone drives SUVs and wants their kids to go to magnet school. The image of Lexington isn't as accurate as it could be since there have been at least 5 subdivisions built chucked full of 300k houses in the time since that photo was taken.

Bitter? Yes, thanks. . I live in a great state, in spite of the fact that these patches of concrete seem to collect plastic people and their cardboard standup spouses. I stay home mostly. People look at me funny when I leave, probably because I look at them funny first. I don't mow my lawn often enough or keep up my property to the standard of the neighborhood.

If you come here lexington is a great place to eat and get a hotel room, but if you want to learn about my appalachia, drive about 90 miles east. Or go to as far east in the state of Tennessee as you can without hitting North Carolina. When you start to look around, thinking of Ned Beatty in his tidy whities and feeling a little scared, you'll be where I would be happy. Someday, I guess.

You've seen one suburb you've seen them all.

I live in a very green one called Beavercreek, suburb to Dayton, Ohio. Dubbed the "bastard" child of Ohio. (Doesn't get a lot of perks other cities its size and smaller in this state get..)

I am on Eastern Time Zone.

Cincinnati and Columbus Ohio are equal distance away, one being north and the other south.

I spent the first fifteen or so years of my life in Ohio so this is the first place in about twenty years I actually fit. Well, kinda. hahahahahah. People seem to have some of the same idiosyncrasies which in other parts of the country don't go over too well.   But here, its all good.

The modest 4 plex I live in is situated 45 miles north of St. Paul, Mn.  in a little, yet growing, town called North Branch, Minnesota.

Our time zone is Central Standard Time Zone.

I personally love the midwest,  having been born and raised in Wisconsin,  love the 4 seasons,  the lakes, forests, wildlife, and there's big cities for them that likes em

Where Are You?

I'm 106 miles from Chicago, I got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, its dark, and I'm wearing sunglasses.

Well, when I'm home I take up residence in a little town called Amanda, OH. Closest major city is Columbus, OH which is to the northeast of Amanda...roughly 60 miles or so...

At the current moment I'm at Miami University, Oxford, OH. Cincinnati is the closest major city to me...'bout a half hour away. Still the the Eastern Time Zone...so, I'm always on the same schedule.

Hey everyone, I want to take the time and respond to you all in due course. I just wanted to say thanks so far for all the responses so far. In the words of the governator "I'll be back."
