Take a number and wait until you're called.

So, I started back at work today after having just over 3 weeks break. Man, getting out of bed this morning was a big struggle. I enjoyed my time off but was disappointed the weather here wasn't better. It has been a very cool summer, with lots of wind and storms. It wasn't conducive to sitting on a beach or for swimming. However, I did spend a lot of time sitting on my balcony, taking in the rays when they came out and generally relaxing.

Anyway, I get back to work to find someone had come into my department and stolen my computer off my desk. This person also helped themselves to a number of other items around the department, including some Christmas gifts from one staff member to another. I was absolutely staggered.

I work in a very large public hospital with cameras and security guards all over the place. Yet someone waltzed in and out with my computer. It wasn't just the box they took. No, they took the screen, keyboard, mouse, speakers, earphones and yes, even the mouse mat. They took all the associated cables, including the one from my phone but left the assortment of bits and pieces and crap usually sitting on my box.

First of all, I am stunned it happened. The amount of work I've lost, despite having a regular backup program in place, is concerning me. I've also lost all my contacts and emails I've kept for the last 6 years or more. I thought email and contact backups were maintained but found out this morning this service is provided only by request. By request! Arrrgggh...

Secondly, I am even more so stunned because it would have to almost certainly be an inside job. My department is locked after hours and has motion-detectors hooked up to alarms in the security head office. There are back ways in but you have to work here to know these. So it means some rotten bastard (or bitch, for that matter) who WORKS here has come in and stolen my PC. Some rotten scumbag opportunist saw my PC as the perfect Christmas present and took it, without having any regard for the amount of work that might be on it and the hassles taking it would cause.

Of course, my boss is running around trying to instigate 'necessary security processes' but it is too little too late. What is the use of fetching water when the fire has already gone out? What a great way to start 2007... NOT!

Wow.  Just wow.  That sucks man.  Sorry.

How they did it was easy.  Social engineering.  And that explains why they took everything (to take less would have been suspicious).  Basically they just told them they were upgrading your computer - and waltzed out with it.

Sorry for your loss.  I once walked out of work with about 2 dozen computers.  I had my son help me on a Sunday.  But these were old clunkers that were going to a Vo-Tech center for the students to play with.  However, the cops did catch me (I was not stealing, but did not have the paperwork on me), and stopped me.  But only after I had loaded my truck up (I was on the last load).  They did not make me return the others.

IN retrospect, I am surprised I was not at least detained.  How did they know the computers were old clunkers?  And let me drive off with a truck load already?  If I had been dishonest, it could very well have been brand new ones instead of junk.  The Capitol Police did not know the difference. (we did straighten out the paperwork when I returned a week later).

That really SUCKS. And what pisses me off about such crimes is that it's most likely commited by one of YOUR OWN people, the people who are supposed to be on YOUR SIDE. And yeah! What's up with all the security stuff? Huh?

Several years ago the local Police Department with the cooperation of local merchants did a thing where they got some college kids to one day "hit" all the stores and see what they could get away with. it was amazing! Some walked out with TV sets! And they did it by getting store employees to help them! Anyway, sorry you feel victim to thievies.

(didja get my last e-mail,BTW? I sent two, but one of them I realized I sent to the old address)

If the hospital has all those security measures, is there a chance it was caught on tape? Are there any cameras in the halls coming to your office?

Man, I hate when someone steals from me. I always take it personal, and it hurts my feelings..... before I get really mad.

Sorry mate.

BlueDev,

Yeah, it suck big time.

Sorry

Me too... Good to see you, BTW.

Doc,

The computer was taken during downtime, when there would have been no one in the department. This also means who ever took it knew how to get in, knew when security would be minimal and simply walked in and took what they wanted. Social engineering is a pretty lame excuse but most likely the correct one. It is a sad reality when people can just take what they like and get away with it.

Shovel,

what pisses me off about such crimes is that it's most likely commited by one of YOUR OWN people

Oh, I'd say it is almost certainly an inside job. It was committed by someone who knew the system, was comfortable walking around the hospital and knew exactly what they wanted. They probably even scoped the placed out before doing the job.

they got some college kids to one day "hit" all the stores and see what they could get away with

I've heard something about a similar thing done here in Australia. Some kids walked out with microwaves and DVD players. One kid walked out with a lawnmower. A lawnmower! It is crazy to think we're so blind we don't see this sort of thing happening in front of our noses. I'm damned sure if I went to Kmart and tried to walk out with anything I might covet, I would be caught in a heartbeat and locked up just as quick.

I did get your email and have responded to it today.

Tova,

There is a small chance it might have been caught on tape if the thief was someone who didn't work here and if they didn't know where the cameras were and if they weren't able to sneak out a back way (of which the hospital has many). A lot of 'ifs', I know but this is the reality.

Like you, I take this sort of thing personally. There is no hell harsh enough for such a person.

I'm so sorry! That's an awful welcome back for you! I do hope they catch who did it. It does sound like an inside job though. Because with all the precautions that you described, there's no way someone from outside would know how to disable all that, unless they were James Bond! Hope you'll be able to get the email addresses and personal stuff back. Oy! Let me know if you need mine again.

Serenity,

Thanks for reminding me. I'm gonna have to put up a blog to ask everyone to resend their email addresses as I lost the lot.

As for catching the person, when I spoke with the head of security the other day, he didn't like the chances. He too thought it was an inside job as the window betwwen when the doors are locked and the alarms are turned on is only about an hour or so.
