I went out to see a friend's band play last night at an open-mic night at the Coogee Bay Hotel. I've played there quite a few times but I've never gone as an audience member. Kind of different but good. It made a change, as my friend Peter has been very supportive of me in the past so it was excellent to return the favour.
Pete's new act still needs a fair bit of work but is developing well. I also caught up with Pete's brother, Patrick, whom I haven't seen for many years. He's married with a couple of kids, runs his own business and says he is very happy with his lot. We talked about 'the good old days' and he lamented the fact he hadn't played anthing musical for a long time. Pat was a very good drummer and also a handy vocalist. He talked of perhaps pursuing something as a singer rather than a percussionist, if only because he doesn't have a drum kit now. I gave him my encouragement and he seemed pretty pleased with it. I guess time will tell if he follows through.
Last night, I also met a lovely lady called Leanne. She is a singer as well, although I've not heard her. She certainly has a lot of confidence, which is always a good sign. She dissappeared at one point and returned with a CD, which she gave me. She'd recorded a couple of songs last weekend and had heard me talking about how much material I've written. I will have a listen and see if we can work together. It's funny the way life works - one minute I'm struggling to find anyone who might be interested in my material, and the next I've got people who I hardly know knocking on my door. I'm hoping something good will happen out of all of this.
