Take a number and wait until you're called.

There are a number of things in my life that are taking shape at the moment.  Some are good, some are not so good.  But this is the way life goes - as one phase of life ends, another begins.

So, I'll assume you all want to know the bad new first...

I recently had my 45 birthday checkup.  My doctor was particularly pleased to hear I'd given up smoking and had started exercising instead.  While there, I also had the usual checks - weight, body fat, blood tests etc.  All of these are fine.  Thanks to my gorgeous wife and her impressive culinary skills, my diet is very good.  I'm also sleeping particularly well and am feeling sharp as the proverbial tack.  I'm the healthiest I've been in my adult life, and the heaviest too.  But this is not the bad news.

I also decided to have my hearing checked again.

For those of you who don't know, I suffer tinnitus - ringing in the ears - and while this has been a bane to my musical career, I've been pretty functional despite it.  Well, this is about to change.  I had a hearing test and my right ear particuarly is quite bad.  Given the last couple of years worth of band practices, it is a safe bet to say my hearing has suffered further because of this.  The only real measure I have left is it lead a quieter life to prevent further damage and complete deafness.

I've yet to tell the band but I know they will be disappointed.  The guys are like brothers to me and it is a decision I haven't made lightly.  I still want to be able to play the guitar and listen to music so the only real option I have is to hang up my headphones and producers hat.

Now, on to the good news...

First of all, I've been writing and posting a lot on a wonderful site called ABCTales.com, thanks to the lovely Tova, who kindly let me know about it.  I've been very pleased with the reaction a lot of my poems and short stories have received but the best news came in the form of an email.  A short story of mine called 'What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted' has been selected to be published in the ABCTales magazine.  This is the first time a piece of fiction of mine will be published and I'm absolutely chuffed.  While there will be no payment for the piece, the fact it was selected and that it will be read by many people is more than enough payment for me at the moment.  What is more important to me is the validation.  It has inspired me to continue writing and trying to produce as high a quality as I can.

The second piece of good news is regarding my ongoing tattooing.  I've posted some previous articles about this adventure but I haven't updated you all about this recently.  I wasn't going to post any pictures until the job was done but have changed my mind.  Rather than tell you all about it, simply have a look and let me know what you think of it all so far.  There is still a few more sessions to go before the work is finished but you will get the general idea of where it is going.

This is the back of my arm and leading up to my shoulder.

This is a close up of some of the work.  You can tell it is still fairly fresh and that there will be further touch-ups required.

Finally, here is a shot of the other side of my arm and a bit of a look at the whole piece.  It is quite difficult to get all of the work into one photo.  I wasn't able to include a shot of where the work runs over my shoulder and onto my back but it also looks great.

So, there you have it.  As I said, as some things end, others begin.  Such is the circle of life.  The only thing I can do is accept it and make the very best of it I possibly can.  Hope this finds all my friends here well and happy.

Peace!

Rough news about the hearing.  Sorry to hear you had to face such a hard decision.

However, great news about the short story!  Good on ya!

Sorry to hear of your hearing. My hearing has never been well, but then I am not a musician. As soon as I read that, I saw the next shoe dropping, and that saddened me. I have enjoyed your music, and when an artist is lost, we all lose something as well.

Best of luck in your future endeavors. And congratulations on the health, I wish mine was so good! (But my last blood donation, my numbers were excellent, so I cannot complain).

Mason,

My SIL had over 85% hearing loss in the right ear for almost her entire life.  She went a few months ago and they did some kind of laser thing to it...now she doesn't even need a HEARING AID...how cool is that?

Ask your Dr if its correctable.

My husband suffers from ringing in the ears/hearing loss.  He found out yesterday.  The ringing started during a particularly tense time on one of his desert tours.  They used a big 50mm gun and didn't always have time to stop and put in ear protection.

Not to mention the screaming engines of fighter aircraft over the course of the last two decades.

I know you love your band so I am sorry to hear you will leave it.  However, I've read your fiction and maybe that is your next phase of life.

I'm so glad they like your stuff there.  They haven't warmed to me like they did you.  Partly because I flooded the forum with Cade long before I realized the 3 a day entry rule.  (IT can't be for a good reason like my entries suck.)

Ooops.

I wish you the best of luck.  Though I don't think luck has much to do with it. hahaha.

Congratulations on the publication!  Woo hoo, Dynamaso. I will have to check out that website when I'm in a literary mood.

The hearing thing is horrible.  It seems like a cruel joke that a musician would have hearing problems.  Here's to being able to continue to enjoy music at a lower volume for a long time.

Oh and the tat rocks.  It's really starting to come together now.  They look like a complete design instead of just some randomness here and there.

Maso, sorry to hear about the hearing problem. Itis a major decision you have to make concerning your music and your band...I wish you the best with that.

How awesome to hear that you are going to be published in a mag. You are a very talented writer.

As for your tatoo design, it seems to be coming along pretty nicely. I like the red and black color combo.

Sorry about your hearing loss as well. I had an aunt that was completely deaf and my sister is completely deaf in one ear so I know a lttle how a hearling loss affects one. But! Again my congrats on the story! Maybe when one door shuts another truly does open! And wow, what colorful and extensive tat work! Did it hurt?

Momijiki,

Rough news about the hearing. Sorry to hear you had to face such a hard decision.

Thank you.  The reality is I don't want to lose what hearing I have left.  I still want to be able to hear my wife speak to me (sometimes ), I still want to hear music and the sound of birds.  I still want to hear the crash of surf and wind through the trees, so while it has been a hard decision, it has also been easy, if this makes any sense.

However, great news about the short story! Good on ya!

Thanks very much.  In my wildest dreams, this will lead to a internationally successful career as a fiction writer.  Yes, it will...

Thanks for your comments.

Doc,

Sorry to hear of your hearing.
Thanks, mate.  I knew there would probably come a time where I had to make this decision.  I guess  I'm surprised it came so soon.
I have enjoyed your music, and when an artist is lost, we all lose something as well.
Thanks very much.   This is a particularly kind thing to say and I really appreciate your support.

Best of luck in your future endeavors. And congratulations on the health, I wish mine was so good! (But my last blood donation, my numbers were excellent, so I cannot complain).
Thanks again, Doc.

Tinnitus, unfortunately, is irreparable.  There are some options I will be exploring.  A lot of people have had success at reducing the ringing with homeopathic solutions, which I am currently researching.  The only other option is hearing aids.  I have no doubt, should the alternative solutions not work, I will be wearing aids soon enough.

I'm sorry to hear this.  It can be really debilatating for some people, who find they're unable to sleep and, in some cases, become quite depressed because of it.  Thankfully, I'm not one of these unlucky people.  I can sleep quite easily and don't suffer depression either.  There are a number of causes of tinnitus.  It is important to find out what it is before exploring solutions.  His doctor should be able to help him with this.

I know you love your band so I am sorry to hear you will leave it. However, I've read your fiction and maybe that is your next phase of life.

Fiction writing was my first love.  My mother recently reminded me of this.  Funny, I had forgotten, but as a child, before I took up the guitar, I would fill note books with stories of my own invention.  Looks like I'm going the full circle.  I must say I absolutely love allowing my imagination to run away as I write.  Is there anything better?

I'm so glad they like your stuff there. They haven't warmed to me like they did you. Partly because I flooded the forum with Cade long before I realized the 3 a day entry rule. (IT can't be for a good reason like my entries suck.)

There are people who still 'flood' the forum with their works but the administrators at ABCTales seem to be quite forgiving.  I doubt very much it is because your Cade tales suck.  I really enjoyed reading them and I'm sure others did too.  I think it probably has more to do with British reserve than anything else.  Or maybe it is because I spend a lot of time there commenting on other's work.  Who knows...

I wish you the best of luck. Though I don't think luck has much to do with it. hahaha.

Thanks very much.  As we've discussed, when I become an internationally famous and reknowned author, you will be invited to my island hideaway.

Loca,

Congratulations on the publication! Woo hoo, Dynamaso. I will have to check out that website when I'm in a literary mood.

Thanks.  It really is a great site with some very, very good writers posting stories there.  I feel blessed to be in such company.

The hearing thing is horrible. It seems like a cruel joke that a musician would have hearing problems. Here's to being able to continue to enjoy music at a lower volume for a long time.

It does some cruel, doesn't it?  Having said this, I did some rather foolish things when I was young.  But the problem is congenital and only exacerbated by my choosing to be a musician.  As you say, I want to continue enjoying music but at a much lower volume.

Oh and the tat rocks. It's really starting to come together now. They look like a complete design instead of just some randomness here and there.

The tattoo is really starting to come together.  As I said, I've got a ways to go before it will be complete but so far, so good.  The next session will be putting in line work that will run around my elbow and down onto my forearm.  I'm looking forward to this.

Thanks for your comments.

Rose,

Maso, sorry to hear about the hearing problem. Itis a major decision you have to make concerning your music and your band...I wish you the best with that.
Thanks for your good wishes.  I know it will be tough for both the boys and for me, but I'm confident I'm making the right decision.  I hope to complete the current round of work I'm doing with the band so that my friends, both here in Australia and overseas, will get to hear the final lot of output before I hang up my headphones.

How awesome to hear that you are going to be published in a mag. You are a very talented writer.
Thanks for this too.  I know this probably sounds really vain or egotistical, but I'm am looking forward to seeing my name in print.

As for your tatoo design, it seems to be coming along pretty nicely. I like the red and black color combo.

Red and black is my favourite colour combination.  Having said this, I'm toying with the idea of introducing a third colour into the scheme, possibly purple.  But I've yet to discuss this with my tattooist.

Thanks for your comments, Rose.  Hope you're enjoying your Summer.  Say g'day to Chris for me too.

I know giving up the band will be really hard for you to do.  I'm glad you have the chance to make the choice with your hearing still in tact, however brief that may be.

Your tattoo looks really good and what a way you have expanded it! It looks really good and I love the colours!  This is a marvelous look from such a small beginning!

Despite your hearing issue, it is great your health is so much better.  Congrats on being pulished!  You are a great writer and now will have an even wider audience for your talent.

Way to go Maso..on the stories and the tattoo as well as your fitness. Not to mention your wonderful wife!

Sorry about the hearing, hopefully it can be corrected. That must really suck for a musician.

I always knew you rocked as a writer, though. I don't need no Brit sight to tell me that, but it does feel good. I know. Much more happiness.

Donna,

I know giving up the band will be really hard for you to do.  I'm glad you have the chance to make the choice with your hearing still in tact, however brief that may be.

In some ways it is hard but in some ways its not.  I have been deliberating on this for some time now, discussing it with Toni and thinking a lot about it.  The thing I am struggling most with is that I feel like I'll be letting the boys down and I really don't like letting anyone down.  They're like brothers to me, as I said earlier, and I'd hate for them to be disappointed in me.  I'm sure they won't.  I'm sure they'll be completely supportive but it doesn't allay my feelings.

Your tattoo looks really good and what a way you have expanded it! It looks really good and I love the colours!  This is a marvelous look from such a small beginning!

It will look even better once it has healed properly.  And even more so once it is all complete.  I'm loving it so far, though.  As I said to Rose, the colours are my favourite combination.

Despite your hearing issue, it is great your health is so much better.

Yes, it is a really good thing.  I'm actually feeling buff, can you believe it?

Congrats on being pulished!  You are a great writer and now will have an even wider audience for your talent.

Thanks very much.  I hope a wider audience will mean someone will want to pay me for doing this.  Heres hoping...

Thanks for your comments.  It is good to see you too.

Excellent news on your health - lousy news on your hearing.  Bad-ass tattoo.  And a loving wife who can cook - sheeit, on the balance, sounds like life is pretty damned good.

Check into the laser thang Tova says 'bout yo' hearing.  I think it'd be worse to be deaf than blind.  I'm pretty aurally based.

Cheers, my mate,

Moskowitz
