Ah, Saturday. Probably my favourite day of the week. Just waking up knowing I don't have to go to work today OR tomorrow fills me with a great sense of calm. Waking today was even sweeter because yesterday at work was the event that was the culmination of work for the last 6 months or so. What this means is no more hectic days, at least until early next year. The event was an all-day medical research awards competition. And it went off without a hitch (well, a couple of hitches, but these are to be expected. Nothing ever runs the way its supposed to and I'm a firm believer in Chaos as an applied principle to daily life).
Even better for me, I have Monday off as well. I get one extra day off a month to make off for the fact that I work a 40 hour week when I'm supposed to work a 38 hour week. As I've been working extra hard for the last month or so, I'm really looking forward to kicking back for a few days and doing as little as possible. I'm going to concentrate on doing some music this weekend. I haven't recorded anything I've written for ages and I have a bunch of new songs I want to get down on disc. I'm also looking forward to playing live again. I took a break from organising any live work as I knew I was going to be very busy. Last week's unplanned performance has given me the right impetus I need to start again.
I'd like my friend Dave to play music with me. He's a completely different musician to me in that I derive a lot of what I do from instinct and he is very knowledgable from a technical point of view. Between us, I think we make a good team. I just need to get Dave past his "we have to rehearse this material until we can play it in our sleep" mindset. I believe this takes some of the passion and spirit out of the music. Hopefully, with the experience he's had playing with a Brazilian band who only rehearse before a show, he will be more open to the idea of getting out and playing live as soon as possible. But if he's not interested, I'm still going to get out and play. I enjoy solo performing as well, but its more fun when there are others on stage at the same time. Either way, the bug has well and truly bitten me again.
