According to Empire magazine...

The list of the top 100 films published in Empire's 201st issue. I'm probably the last person to take any notice of these sorts of lists, but I was surprised and amused to see that my wife and I own 33 of these movies and our wish list includes another 34 of them. The asterisked movies are the ones we own. I won't bother you with our wish list movies because by the time we get around to getting them, the list will probably have changed anyway.

Some of the surprises for me were to see some of my personal favouite movies included on the list. I never thought I'd see 'The Big Lebowski' or 'Grosse Point Blank' on a list such as this. But I was even more surprised to see movies such as 'Stand By Me' and 'Evil Dead 2' on the list. Who'd of thought I had as good taste as this? Not me, thats for sure.

There are a few movies not on the list I think should have been included. Movies such as 'Natural Born Killers', 'The Sixth Sense' and 'Trainspotting', to name a few.

So, how about you JU? Do you agree or disagree with the list? Do you think there are some obvious movies they've missed? And what about your collections. How do they hold up against this list?

I've seen 65 of them that I remember for sure. Another 10 I know that I've seen, but to be honest, saw them so long ago that I don't even remember the characters, let alone the plot.

I agree with you, trainspotting should definitely be on the list, as should a couple of others that are missing.

After taking a look at the movies I know that I haven't seen (nor have any intention of seeing) I realize that I generally avoid Mafia movies... I never realized that until now.
on Feb 05, 2006
(for the record, #96, Leon, is the international name of "The Professional". I support its inclusion).

My summary: glad to see "the Princess Bride" on there; sad to see the omission of "O Brother Where Art Thou?"

Tex; you've certainly got some catching up to do. Can I recommend 'Donnie Darko', 'Magnolia', 'American Beauty' and 'Grosse Point Blank', to start with. These are four of my favourite movies of all time.

32. Blade Runner: Have seen it. Hated it.
36. Batman Begins: Have seen it. Boring as hell.

Isn't taste a funny, subjective thing? 'Blade Runner' is probably in my top 3 favourite movies of all time while 'Batman Begins' restored my faith in comic-to-movie adaptations. I really liked a lot. But there you go... As I said, there is no accounting for taste (mine particularly )

Doc; Empire is an English magazine.

Shovel; I think you would enjoy movies like 'American Beauty', 'Magnolia', 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' and 'Donnie Darko'. These are very good character driven stories, with some really great dialogue.

Drmiler; if you know Batman through the graphic novels and comics, you will most certainly enjoy this movie.

Nicky; I was also surprised not to see 'Being John Malkovich' in the list either. It is a weird but wonderful movie.

Gideon; 'The Professional'... now there is a good movie. As for the 'Princess Bride', I must confess it is not my cup of tea. But you're right about 'Oh Brother Where Art Thou?', which is a superb film.

BlueDev; I guess you've been busy doing other things. A lot of these movies I didn't see at the cinema but rented them ages after on DVD. My wife and I go through phases where we won't see anything for ages then spend a weekend catching up on a whole batch of movies we've not seen.

Davad; it is hard for me to pick my favourite single movie as I have varied tastes, depending on my mood. I love quieter movies like 'Donnie Darko' and 'Lost In Translation' but I just as easily enjoy movies such as 'Batman Begins' and 'Sin City'.

Here are ones on the list I've seen and can't believe they're in their top 100. They're all good movies, but top 100??

97. Jerry Maguire
91. Shaun of the Dead
87. Garden State
66. Sin City
60. Grosse Pointe Blank
47. Pirates of the Caribbean

I agree with you about most of these, with the exception of 'Grosse Pointe Blank' (one of my favourites, so purely subjective) and 'Sin City', which I've seen twice now and think is amazing. And why the hell isn't 'Fargo' or 'The Deer Hunter' on the list? Again, there is no accounting for taste, is there?

Trina; I believe the list was compiled by asking readers to vote for their top 10 favourite movies and then collated from there. I've not seen 'Serenity' yet and am looking forward to catching it. I've heard it is very good. I agree with you about 'Holy Grail' too but I was glad to see 'Spinal Tap'.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

Doc; Empire is an English magazine.

That explains Gone with the Wind.  The English never could understand us colonies!

on Feb 07, 2006
The English have a hard time understanding themselves, for the most part. It is all those different accents in such a small country (Disclaimer for the Dim: I am joking).
